Unknown Art Students

by: Lillian LeGrand

Art Students. When you hear this, who are the first art students that come to your mind? Are Mariah Thomas and Natalie White the first names that pop into your head? I can agree that they are wonderful artists that do amazing art projects, but it might be time to focus on other art students at Capital. There are many amazing artists at Capital that deserve recognition, from the thespians to the authors, from the orchestra to the choir, and from the sculptors to the painters. Some of these artist are Katherine ‘Kat’ Flynn, Andrea ‘Andie’ Stalnaker , and ‘Al’ Martin. They each have a unique art style that differentiates their work from each other’s, but like every other artist they started from the bottom.

Katherine ‘Kat’ Flynn is one of the Freshmen artists in Mrs. Anderson’s Sculpture class. Flynn started doing art at a very young age and seems to be a self-taught artist. Her favorite drawing from her childhood is a rose she drew with her mother.. She explained to me how she did art to “help get things off her mind.”

When it comes to hobbies, Flynn said that she does “many others, but it just depends on the seasons.” Even though she enjoys doing art, Flynn said that the dream job she had since she was five is to be a veterinarian. During her Sculptures class she has occasionally talked about to her friend her love of animals.

When I asked her about her prefered art mediums she was a bit confused, but after giving it some thought she said she mainly used paint. Flynn also was not sure how to describe her art style, yet. She took a moment to think about how she would like to improve her skills and told me that she wanted to get better at details in her pieces. Katherine has done very pretty glass work, and some of the glass pieces she has been working on will be on display in the Art hallway.

Andrea ‘Andie’ Stalnaker, a Sophomore in Mrs. Cook’s Art Two class, took an interest in art her 8th grade year and has taken a few art classes during the summer as well as during school. Stalnaker’s favorite drawings from that time are character designs. Stalnaker thought for a few minutes about why she enjoyed doing art, and in the end she said that she “has always had a creative outlook on life and doing art really helps me get that out. I just love creating things, creative worlds, and stuff that really shows my feelings and emotions to other people.” She also does a few other artsy things such as playing the piano, knitting, and sewing.

When I asked her about what she wanted to be in the future she, without hesitant, stated “I wanna become an animator.”

She explained that she liked to use traditional mediums such as color pencils and ink, but she said she prefers to use color pencils. She described her art style to be like a graphic novel or cartoonish with a touch of realism in it. she hopes to change a few things in her art style but she wants to try to learn about lot more things. Andrea has done some very cute and cheerful drawings for her art class, and they can be seen in the main foyer or in the Art hallway from time to time.

‘Al’ Martin, a junior in Mrs. Cook’s Art 3 class, began doing art at the age of thirteen and started taking art classes in 6th grade. Martin’s favorite art piece from when she was learning was a picture of a tree that she made; she laughed a bit when it was mentioned and called it a good tree. ‘Al’ mused for a bit about why she does art; after giving it some thought she explained “It’s something that everyone relates over is art and everyone looks at art. So I was like ‘Hey, my friends like art. I like art. Let’s all just start drawing and posting things.’” Martin also enjoys cooking, baking, playing the piano, and playing with her pet dragon.

Even though she loves doing these hobbies, she expressed, “I’m going to college for biomedical engineering, and I’m doing tattooing on the side, so maybe some digital art here and there, but tattooing is my main objective. So I’m trying to build up a style that goes well with tattoo art.”

As far as mediums, she mostly uses pencils or sometimes uses acrylics and rarely uses color pencils or markers. She elucidated how she uses different styles when it comes to drawing, but that she mainly does an Anime or older Anime style and sometimes does animals; ‘Al’ plans on trying to making her style more realistic especially with the eyes, and to work on proportions. ‘Al’ has painted unique paintings for her art class and they can be also seen in the Art hallway on occasion.

They each have amazing art that really displays who they are as artist and as students. Some people might just glance at their artwork and see it as something that is just ordinary, but if you take a closer look you will find something that is unique for no artist is the same. Each artist has something that they contribute to the art world and the world in general, and the art students at Capital for sure contribute in a big way to the art community in Montana.
