GLASS POSITIVE

By: Anna Justice

SPOILER ALERT!!! Writer and director M. Night Shyamalan, of Unbreakable and Split, brought a new movie, Glass, to theaters January 18, 2019. If you’re a sucker for psychology, then this is the movie for you. Glass is the sequel to Split from back in January 20, 2017. As you may have guessed, all actors are new except for two; many new faces appear in Glass.

Samuel L. Jackson stars as Elijah Price, a.k.a. Mr. Glass, the mastermind of technology. He hacks the security system of a mental institution. Mr. Glass is a villain with a genius mind as his strength, while his weakness is that he has been born with very soft bones that break easily. Mr. Glass is introduced in a wheelchair that protects him from any injury to his soft bones; he is heavily sedated with drugs. He has learned to hide his sedation pills under his arm chair, so they’re pulling an act.

Bruce Willis stars as David Dunn who has the ability to bend metal and move enormous amounts of weight. David Dunn believes he is like Clark Kent and can perform superhero feats. David Dunn convinces his son he has superhero, comic-book abilities. It is their little secret. David believes he can sense evil through touch. He works with his son doing undercover-crime work; they successfully solve cases before the police investigators. This gets him into trouble for causing embarrassment to the police department who then arrest him, placing David into the mental hospital with Mr. Glass and Kevin.

James McAvoy stars as Kevin Wendell Crumb, the multi-personality star of ‘Split’. Kevin is the original personality; then, 9-year-old Hedwig is the child within us. Hedwig’s smile is as contagious and softens us as he always invites us to play a game with him. The next personality is the stiff, English-speaking Patricia who always makes sure everything is done properly, and Naughty Dennis makes folks little nervous at the ideas he suggests. The perfectionist is the very stern and serious part. Then there is the half-human half-beast personality—the ‘beast’. This is the most feared personality and can be violent. The beast can walk across ceilings and walls while also having the ability to run on all fours with incredible speed across a field, attacking like a lion.

If you like psychology, this is a great movie. The three patients are placed in a mental hospital and are tended by Sarah Paulson, Dr. Staple, who insists they are delusional. But the three start questioning if they’re real. The movie is very dramatic in revealing their capabilities. At the end of the movie, the three of them really derail their doctor. Elijah hacks the camera system of the hospital, wreaking havoc for all. He makes all of the building’s security cameras go live across the wide net, befriends the Beast, and kills their nurses who were abusive to the patients throughout the movie.

After all of this, the three patients end up finding themselves outside the hospitals front yard. The three patients go at it as the hospital staff it trapped inside the building for their best interest. The ending will throw you for an insane twist (pardon the pun). Dr. Staple gets ahold of the situation, and as David Dunn is struggling to keep himself going, one of the main nurses sadly drowns David in a puddle at the side of the parking lot. Kevin Crumb is shot, which in my opinion is the saddest death I’ve seen in a long time. Kevin passes away in the arms of the women he loves. And as for Elijah, he has an extremely twisted death. The Beast, who is really Kevin's’ other personality, crushes Elijah to death, breaking his gentle bones. Elijah passes away in the arms of his loving mother in the end which is a sad moment. The movie ends with the wonderful twist of all the footage being leaked to the internet, and we get the pleasure and joy of watching all the people of the city watching and experiencing the horrific events that the three inmates were forced to endure. I highly recommend this film.
