Capital High School’s honors and AP biology teacher, Sarah Urban, was published for coauthoring an article in the journal "The American Biology Teacher" in March.
Urban writes, "It was an article we wrote about biochar experiments (including the plant project that my honors classes do at the end of the year)."
Biochar is charcoal that is used as a soil amendment, and has the potential to help mitigate climate change. Mrs. Urban uses this in an experiment with her Honors Biology classes to test and observe the growth of plants in different soil types.
Mrs. Urban informed, "It was done through the BANR (Bioenergy Alliance Network of the Rockies) project, a grant through the USDA and Colorado State University, University of Montana, University of Wyoming and some others."
